ABSTRACT

After two years of online learning, minor changes happened in some tiny places which we may not always notice. These changes may impact the school management, education arrangement, and curriculum design: what do students expect from their teachers, and the school? Are they expecting forever online learning, and getting their degree completely online? In this study, we examined 93 final-year students from the school of computing science which mainly used work-based learning applied to learn pedagogy. We analyze their viewpoint on how COVID-19 changed their understanding of teaching and learning: what is the role of teachers and students? And how do they see the arrangement for the internship program? We found that over 92% of students agree that a creditable degree can better secure a job;over 68% of the students believed that face-to-face teaching is still a better choice, but at the same time, over 73% wish to have the materials recorded so that they can access them at their convenience time. We also examined some of the course design elements, especially those related to the internship program, to achieve a possible curriculum improvement for the students in the Asia Pacific region. © 2022 ACM.

ABSTRACT

In this study, we implemented graph neural network (GNN) methods to forecast in vitro inhibitory bioactivity or pharmacological concentration of chemical compounds against severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronaviruses from the graph representation amongst the compounds (i.e., nodes) and their respective features(i.e., node features) obtained by RDKit tool from their respectively SMILES (Simplified MolecularInput Line-Entry System), and we compared GNN models by experiments with our graph data of 375 nodes with 44,475 edges or links. This was done in response to the severe and significant consequences of the ongoing Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) disease. As a result, we discovered that implemented models, simple graph convolution (SGC), and graph convolution network (GCN) performed significantly well with comparable performance. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To explore the double psychosocial threats of the COVID-19 pandemic, targeted behavior toward Chinese Americans, and the correlates to their mental health. Methods: A quantitative, cross-sectional, and descriptive design was utilized by using a purposive convenience sample of 301 Chinese Americans over the age of 18 residing in the United States. Online data collection was conducted through the social media platform WeChat from April 8–21, 2021. Descriptive statistical analysis was used for the participants' demographic characteristics, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), Double Threat Situations, COVID-19 Racial Discrimination, and General Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7). Stepwise logistic regression was conducted to verify predictors for anxiety levels by GAD-7. Results: In this sample (N = 301), 127 (42.19%) were male and 174 (57.81%) were female. The average age was 41.67 (SD = 5.89). Among MSPSS subscales, social support from family (MSPSS-Fam, 79.73%, n = 240) and social support from significant others (MSPSS-SO, 73.75%, n = 222) were high. 231 (76.74%) reported threats due to their Chinese ethnic background during the COVID-19 outbreak. Predictors for the high anxiety level by GAD-7 were COVID-19 racial discrimination from the local community (OR = 0.47, 95% CI = 0.39–0.71, p < 0.001), media/online (OR = 0.36, 95% CI = 0.26–0.53, p < 0.001), the perceived threat from the COVID-19 virus (OR = 0.33, 95% CI = 0.23–0.51, p < 0.001) and Perceived racism threat from Chinese background related to COVID-19 (OR = 0.31, 95% CI = 0.21–0.49, p < 0.001). Conclusions: COVID-19 double-threats (The virus and racial discrimination) situations are significantly related to the high level of anxiety among Chinese Americans. The sense of belonging and social perceptions of Chinese immigrants is closely related to public health problems in Western societies and needs to be addressed at all levels. Our findings call for the attention of healthcare workers to specific racism double-threatened situations and high mental health risks, as well as direct and indirect ethnic discrimination that Chinese Americans are experiencing during this pandemic, the long-term influences and effective coping ways related to this issue should be explored in further research. © 2023, Tech Science Press. ABSTRACT

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, videoconferencing technology has been widely adopted as a convenient, powerful, and fundamental tool that has simplified many day-to-day tasks. However, video communication is dependent on audible conversation and can be strenuous for those who are Hard of Hearing. Communication methods used by the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community differ significantly from those used by the hearing community, and a distinct language gap is evident in workspaces that accommodate workers from both groups. Therefore, we integrated users in both groups to explore ways to alleviate obstacles in mixed-group videoconferencing by implementing user-generated icons. A participatory design methodology was employed to investigate how the users overcome language differences. We observed that individuals utilized icons within video-mediated meetings as a universal language to reinforce comprehension. Herein, we present design implications from these findings, along with recommendations for future icon systems to enhance and support mixed-group conversations. © 2023 ACM.

ABSTRACT

BackgroundUnderstanding the dynamics of humoral immunity after COVID-19 vaccination is crucial in developing vaccination strategies. Antibody response patterns are more complex in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) because of their underlying autoimmunity and immunosuppressive medications. The kinetics of vaccine response in RA patients are not well understood.ObjectivesTo construct a model of antibody response to COVID-19 vaccination in patients with RA.MethodsTwo patient groups were included for the study. The first group was composed of RA patients who were enrolled for influenza vaccination study between Oct 6, 2021 and November 3, 2021, in whom serial serum samples were obtained 0, 4, 16 weeks after vaccination. The second group was consecutively enrolled from outpatient clinic between October 6, 2021 and June 3, 2022, in whom serum sample was obtained once. After collecting data on demographics, vaccination and infection history of COVID-19 were obtained by self-report via questionnaire and data from Korean center for disease control. We then measured antibody titers against receptor binding domain of spike protein (anti-RBD) and nucleocapsid (anti-N), using Chemiluminescence microparticle immunosaasy (Abbott, USA) and Electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (Roche, Germany) respectively. The anti-RBD titer was log-transformed to improve normality. Time from vaccination and log of anti-RBD titer was modeled using fractional polynomial. Covariates including age, sex, BMI, underlying disease and immunosuppressive drugs were analyzed using Generalized Estimating Equations to account for repeated measured from a subject.ResultsA total of 736 patients (1042 samples) were enrolled. After excluding patients who experienced COVID-19 infection before sampling (n=84), those unvaccinated (n=44) and uncertain COVID-19 infection history (n=59), the data on 778 samples from 549 patients were analyzed (Group 1: 125, Group 2: 424). Antibody titer reached peak at 12 days after vaccination and decreased exponentially (Figure 1) which fell to 36.5% from peak after 2 months. Compared to the first vaccination, the 3rd and 4th vaccination significantly shifted anti-RBD antibody response curve (28 times, 95% CI 4~195;32 times 95% CI 4~234, respectively). However, there was no significant shift after the 4th vaccination from the 3rd vaccination (p=0.6405). Multivariable analysis showed that number of vaccinations and sulfasalazine (coefficient: 0.40, 95% CI 0.12~0.68) increased vaccine response but age (coefficient: -0.03, 95% CI -0.04~-0.02), abatacept (coefficient: -2.07, 95% CI -3.30~-0.84) and, JAK inhibitor (coefficient: -0.82, 95% CI -1.34~-0.31) decreased vaccine response.ConclusionAnti-RBD response to COVID-19 vaccination showed a peak at 12 days after vaccination and then exponentially decreased in patient with RA. The antibody response is affected by age and medications used for the treatment of RA.Table 1.ln[RBD (U/ml)]coefficient (univariable)95% CIp-valuecoefficient (multivariable)95% CIp-valuesex (female)0.17-0.22, 0.550.393---age-0.02-0.03, -0.01<.001**-0.03-0.04, -0.02<.001**DM0.11-0.27, 0.500.568---HTN-0.38-0.69, -0.070.018*---CKD0.680.07, 1.290.030*---RA duration (yr)-0.04-0.06, -0.010.001**---Pd (mg/d)-0.06-0.11, 0.000.035*---MTX use-0.23-0.52, 0.050.105---HCQ use0.01-0.28, 0.290.965---SSZ use0.450.07, 0.840.022*0.400.12,0.680.005**LEF use0.00-0.37, 0.370.988---TNF inhibitors use0.29-0.16, 0.730.208---Abatacept use-2.07-3.14, -0.99<.001**-2.07-3.30, -0.840.001**JAK inhibitors use-0.88-1.52, -0.240.007**-0.82-1.34, -0.310.002**Time (months)log(t)-1.96-2.37, -1.54<.001**-1.90-2.29, -1.50<.001**t

ABSTRACT

Objectives: We would like to report a case in which a COVID-19 patient who was transferred to our hospital due to a lack of medical resources due to the COVID-19 outbreak in Daegu, South Korea, on February, 2020, underwent double lung transplantation after 110 days with VV-ECMO support and performed double lung re-transplantation 865 days after lung transplantation. Method(s): ECMO was performed on a total of 69 patients with COVID-19-related acute circulatory/ respiratory failure from February 2020 to December 2022. Among them, 16 patients were registered for lung transplantation, and 5 out of 16 registered patients performed lung transplants. One in five people who performed lung transplantation performed retransplantation on the 865thday after transplantation. Result(s): A 52-year-old female patient was transferred to our hospital, and VV-ECMO was performed the next day. The double lung transplantation was performed 112 days after hospitalization and was discharged 238 days after surgery. 668 days after lung transplantation, home O2 was applied as bronchitis obliterans syndrome, and her lung function deteriorated rapidly later, and re-transplantation was decided. In the patient;s HLA test, HLA class I cPRA% was 32% and HLA class II cPRA% was 100%. Desensitization was performed six times plasmapheresis with administrating Botezomib and immunoglobulin, and then re-transplantation was performed on the 865th day after lung transplantation. The patient has maintained her daily life without any special complications other than the occurrence of central DI after surgery. The pathological findings of the lung previously transplanted to the patient were acute rejection (ISHLT grade A2), chronic airway rejection (ISHLT grade C1, B0), and chronic vascular rejection (ISHLT grade D1). Conclusion(s): The long term result of patients who performed lung transplantation with COVID 19 related respiratory failure is still unknown. Therefore, even patients who have undergone long-term VV-ECMO support due to COVID 19 related respiratory failure are expected to achieve good results if lung transplantation is needed by carefully approaching and treating with a multidisciplinary approach.

ABSTRACT

Through COVID-19, the importance of supply chain management of raw material minerals has been maximized. In particular, supply chain management is important for rare metals, which are difficult to manage demand and supply, in order to secure raw materials for the parts and materials industry that Korea is actively promoting. In this study, a system was established and evaluated to select Critical minerals that need to respond to Korea's industrial structure and global risks by quantifying tangible and intangible risk factors. Global Supply Concentration, Supplying country risk, Policy Social Environment Regulation, Domestic Import Instability, Risk responsiveness, Market Scale, Demand Fluctuation and Economic Importance were evaluated as evaluation indicators. The degree of risk and risk impact were quantitatively measured using the criticality matrix-criticality level. After evaluating 40 types of minerals used in domestic new growth businesses, 15 types of Critical minerals(Li, Pt, Co, V, REE, Mg, Mo, Cr, Ti, W, C, Ni, Al, Mn, Si) in Korea were selected. The results are expected to be used to establish policies to strengthen resource security and to make decisions to form a company's raw material portfolio.

ABSTRACT

The Chinese government's rigorous efforts to enhance its soft power have confronted a major challenge during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to look at how the Chinese soft power changed throughout the pandemic using English news articles that covered China. The research took a data science approach to investigate the contents of articles using machine-learning-based sentiment analysis and Dirichlet-Multinomial Regression (DMR) analysis. The results show a gradual downturn in overall sentiment and that the topics related to political issues made the most significant impact. Nevertheless, the major increase in referencing Chinese social media implied that the sources of Chinese soft power have been diversified throughout the pandemic. In addition, this research has aimed to engage in major debates around soft power theory. Providing a multi-disciplinary approach for analyzing soft power, this research has tackled the difficulties in the quantitative conceptualization of soft power.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have comprehensively investigated the preva-lence and various potential risk factors for de-lirium among patients with advanced cancer ad-mitted to the acute palliative care unit (APCU). Our objective was to evaluate the comprehen-sive association between delirium and various risk factors among patients with advanced can-cer in an acute palliative care setting using a pa-tient-based multicenter registry cohort.PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a multicenter, patient-based registry cohort study collected in South Korea between January 1, 2019, and December 31, 2020. Delirium was identified using a medical record review based on the criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition.RESULTS: In total, 2,124 eligible patients with advanced cancer in the APCU met the inclu-sion criteria. There were 127 out of 2,124 pa-tients (prevalence, 6.0%;95% CI, 5.0 to 7.1) with delirium during admission. Delirium in patients with advanced cancer was associated with age >70 years (OR, 1.793;95% CI, 1.246 to 2.581), male sex (OR, 1.675;95% CI, 1.131 to 2.479), no chemotherapy during hospitalization (OR, 2.019;95% CI, 1.236 to 3.298), hearing impairment (OR, 3.566;95% CI, 1.176 to 10.810), underweight (OR, 1.826;95% CI, 1.067 to 3.124), current use of opioid medication (OR, 1.942;95% CI, 1.264 to 2.982), previous history of delirium (OR, 12.497;95% CI, 6.920 to 22.568), and mental illness (OR, 2.333;95% CI, 1.251 to 4.352).CONCLUSIONS: In a large-scale multicenter patient-based registry cohort, delirium was asso-ciated with old age, male sex, no chemotherapy during hospitalization, hearing impairment, un-derweight, current use of opioid medication, and a history of delirium and mental illness. Our find-ings suggest physicians should pay attention to delirium in patients with advanced cancer admit-ted to the APCU with the above risk factors.

ABSTRACT

The political affiliation of governors has been highlighted as the most important predictor of a state's aggressiveness in responding to the pandemic, that is, Democratic governors advocated for more stringent policies than their Republican counterparts. However, of the 39 states that issued a statewide stay-at-home order (SAHO) mandate, nearly half were led by Republican governors. Using a qualitative comparative analysis, we find that gubernatorial partisanship alone cannot explain SAHO mandates. If partisanship played a role at all, it did so only in states with large metropolitan areas or with fewer public health resources. Regardless of the governor's partisanship, the combination of problem severity and public health resources was sufficient to produce a stringent policy outcome. Emphasis on gubernatorial decisions as purely political overlooks material needs relevant for future pandemic response and the potential for evidence and future coordination. © 2023 American Society for Public Administration.

ABSTRACT

In this study, we investigated COVID-19 ' s (coronavirus disease 2019's) effect on job insecurity, presenteeism, and turnover intention in hotel environments by measuring hotel staffs' generalized anxiety disorder (GAD-7) levels. We surveyed 351 hotel employees from the office, facilities, food and beverage, and cooking departments. Convenience sampling was performed from December 2021 to March 2022. Job insecurity was measured with seven items (easily annoyed, tension, anxiety, nervousness, a lot of worry, fear, uncontrollable worry, restlessness, and discomfort) and demonstrated a significantly positive effect on presenteeism and turnover intention in the high GAD-7 group compared with the low GAD-7 group. Our study contributes academic value to research on GAD-7 in the hotel industry. In addition, it provides a theoretical basis for the relationship between job insecurity and hotel employees' psychological response to the pandemic. Based on the findings, we recommend periodically implementing the GAD-7 scale for employee assessments. Consequently, hotel companies can create guidelines for human resource management post-COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The COVID pandemic has had a significant impact on the US health care system. Our primary objective was to understand the impact of the COVID pandemic on non-COVID-related health care utilization among insured individuals with chronic conditions. Our secondary objective was to examine the differential impact by individual characteristics. Main Data Source: Medical and pharmacy claims data for individuals enrolled in a large insurer across the United States. Research Design: A retrospective and repeated cross-sectional study. Overall and condition-specific health care utilization and cost metrics in (1) March 1 to June 15 and (2) June 16 to September 30, 2020 were compared with the same months during 2016-2019. Subjects: Members of all ages with a diagnosis of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or chronic kidney disease with commercial or Medicare Advantage insurance. Results: Most non-COVID-related health care utilization decreased drastically on March 1 to June 15, 2020 [odds ratio (OR) range across condition-specific tests: 0.55-0.69;incidence rate ratio (IRR) range for hospitalization/emergency department (ED) visit/outpatient visit: 0.65-0.77] but returned to closer to pre-COVID levels by June 16 to September 30, 2020 [OR range across condition-specific tests: 0.93-1.08;IRR range for hospitalization/ED visit/outpatient visit: 0.77-0.97]. Our study found an enormous increase in telehealth use on March 1 to June 15, 2020 (90-170 times prepandemic levels). A differential impact was observed by age, sex, region of residence, and insurance type. Implications: Further investigation is needed to assess the impact of these changes in health care utilization on long-term health outcomes.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted consumers to postpone in-store purchases and shift to online shopping, decreasing overall retail spending. As the global lockdown eases and shoppers return to offline stores and malls, shopping malls seek to facilitate in-store consumer experiences at entertainment facilities. Given the importance of entertainment facilities to the cross-selling revenue of shopping malls, we investigate the relationship between consumers' movie-watching and subsequent (hedonistic) grocery purchases. Our analysis of a panel database that includes transaction details at the consumer level shows that movie-watching is negatively correlated with consumer spending. Furthermore, consumers' psychological states induced by content and contextual factors moderate the negative effect of movie-watching;after watching a fantasy (as compared to thriller) genre or watching a movie in a less crowded theater, consumers are more likely to make hedonic purchases at the supermarket. These findings provide theoretical and managerial implications for retail operators exploring cross-selling opportunities post-pandemic. © 2023

ABSTRACT

The impact of community-based tourism (CBT) on residents' quality of life (QOL) has been realized in many aspects, concerning attitude, physical, environmental, and relationships in society. However, several positive and negative factors influence QOL, and few studies have explored these factors. Focusing on measuring the significant CBT factors that have not been previously explored and examined, this study explored factors that influence QOL in CBT using factor analysis. The results show that CBT factors measuring residents' QOL, such as economic, public administration, technology, external actors, and social inequalities in several community-based attributes, can measure the effect on residents' QOL. This study emphasizes that CBT factors are suitably performed and managed can dynamically reduce and alleviate the impacts on residents' QOL. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

ABSTRACT

A 44-year-old woman with underlying systemic lupus erythematosus and antiphospholipid antibody syndrome presented with nausea and vomiting after her 2nd vaccination for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Thirteen days after warfarin injection was administered along with steroid therapy, the patient suffered sudden right shoulder pain, paresthesia, and swelling, suggesting acute compartment syndrome. The warfarin regimen was bridged to low molecular weight heparin and fasciotomy was performed. Multiple hematoma evacuation after fasciotomy was done and the patient was referred for skin necrosis. Frequent debridement and negative pressure wound therapy were performed to heal the right upper extremity skin defect. Afterwards, the patient experienced hemorrhage in her left upper extremity and was treated conservatively with simple compression. This report suggests that patients undergoing anticoagulation therapy for antiphospholipid syndrome should be closely monitored for subcutaneous hemorrhage, and that prompt diagnosis and treatment may prevent adverse re-sults. If massive skin necrosis occurs, multiple surgical debridement procedures and application of negative pressure wound therapy may be an option. © 2022 Korean Wound Management Society.

ABSTRACT

The large consumption of food travel vlogs during the COVID-19 pandemic shows its potential for destination promotion. However, little research has been done on this video form. This study explores the difference in food travel vlogs, short videos, live videos, and DMO promotion videos (DPVs) and concludes four distinctive characteristics of food travel vlogs (storytelling, authenticity, intimacy, and presence) through 38 semi-structured interviews. A Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) model-based conceptual framework is proposed to help understand the mechanism underlying the influence of food travel vlogs on travellers. This study hopes to provide theoretical and practical implications for destination management and vlogging practices. © 2023, The Author(s).

ABSTRACT

Clinical question What is the role of drug interventions in the treatment and prevention of covid-19? Recommendations The first version on this living guidance focuses on corticosteroids. It contains a strong recommendation for systemic corticosteroids in patients with severe and critical covid-19, and a weak or conditional recommendation against systemic corticosteroids in patients with non-severe covid-19. Corticosteroids are inexpensive and are on the World Health Organisation list of essential medicines. How this guideline was created This guideline reflects an innovative collaboration between the WHO and the MAGIC Evidence Ecosystem Foundation, driven by an urgent need for global collaboration to provide trustworthy and living covid-19 guidance. A standing international panel of content experts, patients, clinicians, and methodologists, free from relevant conflicts of interest, produce recommendations for clinical practice. The panel follows standards, methods, processes, and platforms for trustworthy guideline development using the GRADE approach. We apply an individual patient perspective while considering contextual factors (that is, resources, feasibility, acceptability, equity) for countries and healthcare systems. The evidence A living systematic review and network meta-analysis, supported by a prospective meta-analysis, with data from eight randomised trials (7184 participants) found that systemic corticosteroids probably reduce 28 day mortality in patients with critical covid-19 (moderate certainty evidence;87 fewer deaths per 1000 patients (95% confidence interval 124 fewer to 41 fewer)), and also in those with severe disease (moderate certainty evidence;67 fewer deaths per 1000 patients (100 fewer to 27 fewer)). In contrast, systemic corticosteroids may increase the risk of death in patients without severe covid-19 (low certainty evidence;absolute effect estimate 39 more per 1000 patients, (12 fewer to 107 more)). Systemic corticosteroids probably reduce the need for invasive mechanical ventilation, and harms are likely to be minor (indirect evidence). Understanding the recommendations The panel made a strong recommendation for use of corticosteroids in severe and critical covid-19 because there is a lower risk of death among people treated with systemic corticosteroids (moderate certainty evidence), and they believe that all or almost all fully informed patients with severe and critical covid-19 would choose this treatment. In contrast, the panel concluded that patients with non-severe covid-19 would decline this treatment because they would be unlikely to benefit and may be harmed. Moreover, taking both a public health and a patient perspective, the panel warned that indiscriminate use of any therapy for covid-19 would potentially rapidly deplete global resources and deprive patients who may benefit from it most as potentially lifesaving therapy. Updates This is a living guideline. Work is under way to evaluate other interventions. New recommendations will be published as updates to this guideline. Readers note This is version 1 of the living guideline, published on 4 September (BMJ 2020;370:m3379) version 1. Updates will be labelled as version 2, 3 etc. When citing this article, please cite the version number. ABSTRACT

This study focused on the experiences and perceptions of Asian employees and attempted to provide insights into effective internal communication and leadership styles related to organizational diversity and inclusion (D&I) efforts. More specifically, this study examined how the dialogic competencies of internal communication (i.e. mutuality, openness) and a D&I-oriented leadership style influence the formation of a D&I-supportive climate in the workplace and consequently strengthen the quality organization-Asian employee relationship. The study also considered the perceived authenticity and experiences of COVID-19 anti-Asian racism as key factors. Online survey results showed that dialogic competencies play a decisive role in influencing the workplace climate and, in turn, reinforcing trust, satisfaction, commitment, and control mutuality among Asian employees in their organizations. Perceived authenticity, influenced by mutuality and openness, directly or indirectly influences relational outcomes through the workplace climate. Asian employees who had experienced relatively severe COVID-19 anti-Asian racism placed more importance on the role of dialogic competencies in D&I internal communication. D&I-oriented leadership had a limited and conditional effect on fostering a workplace climate that supported D&I but not on perceived authenticity. Theoretical and practical implications were discussed. © AMIC/WKWSCI-NTU 2023.
